Our trip to Java: sourcing pots at the origin

Every pot in our collection has a story, and ours begins in the interior of Indonesia, Java. In 2024, we made our first trip to find our supplier and source our first products.

The lead-up

We had made contact with several suppliers in advance. We wanted to see the pots up close, and especially see where we source our products from.

In Java

There we stood, after a long flight and a car ride across the Javanese countryside, at the place where we would start our own business. The most special thing about sourcing in a country like Indonesia is how casual everything goes there. At one supplier, we sat together eating at a roadside restaurant to get to know each other. Another supplier took us to his home and family. So special to experience, and a great way to meet the people you are going to work with.

At people's homes

That is how we met Parakasit, and together with his sister and parents we ate homemade sate, salak pondoh (snake fruit) and duku palembang.

In the end, you make a choice based on economic and reliability considerations, but mostly on gut feeling. And so we bought our very first shipment of beautiful limestone pots on the spot!

And that is how Montung was born.
