Rectangular natural stone trough with ornamental grasses in a bright room next to a wooden bench

Square and rectangular stone troughs

A natural stone trough is a square or rectangular container, carved by hand from a single block of limestone. Montung sells antique troughs from Java, Indonesia: decades old, weathered by time and every one unique. You can use a trough as a planter, as a water trough or have it converted into a garden fountain.

Below you see all troughs available now, with price and exact dimensions. You can view them in person by appointment in Zuidoostbeemster, in the municipality of Purmerend.

Sizes and weight

The troughs in our collection are roughly 50 to 100 cm long, 40 to 75 cm wide and 25 to 45 cm high, and weigh roughly 30 to 180 kilos. The exact dimensions are listed with every trough. Because it is natural stone, they can differ by a few centimetres.

Thanks to that weight a trough stands firmly and never blows over. We deliver the troughs ourselves and place them where you want them. Collection in Zuidoostbeemster is free.

Planter, water trough or fountain

As a planter, put a layer of clay pebbles or gravel at the bottom for drainage. Some troughs already have a natural drainage hole, for others we add one on request. Beautiful in a trough: a small olive tree, ornamental grasses, lavender, rosemary or low greenery such as sedum.

Limestone is porous. If you want to use the trough as a water trough or fountain, the inside first gets a transparent stone coating. You can convert almost any trough into a fountain yourself, or we make it fully water ready for 195 euros.

Why an antique trough

Our troughs are not new or imitation stone containers. Local craftsmen carved them by hand from limestone, after which they stood outdoors for years. That gives them a rough relief, worn edges, moss and a patina no factory can copy. We buy them ourselves on Java and choose every piece by hand.
