How did we come up with the idea to source limestone products, and how did we arrive at the name 'Montung'?
We sell natural stone pots and troughs that we personally select and source ourselves. Pots with character, with a story and a timeless look. In this blog we tell you how it all started and where the name comes from.
How we found these pots
When we moved from Amsterdam to Zuidoostbeemster, we went from a tiny courtyard garden to a large green garden, and started looking for robust, rustic pots to match.
No plastic, no sleek concrete planters, that no longer fit what we wanted. We were looking for something more special, more robust, more authentic. We could find what we were looking for via Pinterest and Google, but you could not order it in the Netherlands.
That is how we got the idea to source these pots ourselves. After a few weeks of initial research, that is how we ended up in Indonesia.
The name Montung
Sourcing there for the first time in 2024, at my grandmother's birthplace, felt extra special.
We still source personally at the origin. We travel to Indonesia ourselves, seek out the families and traders who have owned these pots for generations, and handpick every pot ourselves. That way we know for sure that what ends up in your garden is exactly right.
That is also where the name 'Montung' comes from. It is the name my Indonesian grandmother carried, a name that, in our view, fits our brand perfectly: authentic, special, timeless.
